As a doctor, you will be expected to spend over eight years in dedicated training. This might seem like more than enough to be qualified in any profession that you could care to name. In the medical profession however, eight years can be your basic training period. When you go out in to the working world after all this time, you might find that potential employers are wary of inexperienced doctors.

The foundation programme is designed to give medical professionals a broad range of experience in all aspects of medicine, from general practice to surgery.

By completing the foundation programme you will have been given plenty of experience in on the job training in several roles of NHS jobs. In the first year you will do work placements in both surgical and medical roles. These will be fairly generic, but will give you a good insight in to the running of the medical world.
In the second year you will be able to choose three specific areas. This will give you experience in the NHS doctor jobs which you are most interested in. You can choose three subjects from any specialist area that you choose. Many programmes will include at least one speciality which is suffering from a shortage of staff.

Much of the NHS job training you will receive on the foundation programme is broad based, giving you a great grounding in whichever field you want to progress in. Whether you are starting in general practise or cardiology, you will find your foundation training an invaluable aid in your NHS doctor job. Completing the foundation course will grant you a place on the specialty register, or GP register. This will allow you to become a specialist consultant, or a general practitioner.

Once you have completed this you are not trapped in the NHS jobs you were trained in. You can continue on to further training in any subject you wish. While NHS doctor jobs are available to any doctor who has completed the Foundation Programme, specialty training is the perfect way to slip in to the new career.
